Chameleon lags on some systems (i7?)
« on: December 20, 2009, 01:24:13 PM »
Hi All,
First want to thank everyone again in the greater OSx86 community.

I have noticed an issue where the chameleon interface itself lags badly on both i7 systems i have put together. Since i have only built two i7 Hacs so far i cant say for sure if this affects all of them. I can say it appears isolated to i7 platforms (I have built many, many systems using core2 platforms and none of them have had this problem).

In the other systems i have built the chameleon interface is snappy. Typing in boot flags or selecting different boot drives works as you would expect.

But on both i7 systems i have the interface is very slow, with noticeable lag when typing, navigating, etc. Most annoying though is that the timeout, set to 3 seconds, goes very slowly, taking over 10 seconds to continue the boot.

Also, once leaving the chameleon screen (entering the grey boot screen) things go quickly again as they should and performance in OS X is great. It just in the chameleon screen that there is this lag.

Consistent with these findings, using the -v command, the first kexts and chameleon loaded items display very slowly one at a time down the screen, then once it enters the usual black screen everything else loads quickly.

I cant be the only one noticing this. But i cant find any topics discussing.

Are other users seeing this? is it i7 only?
Thanks,
g\

some system basics on the two i7 affected:
one is an Asus P6T7 WS based system, the other is a gigabyte EX58 based system, so both rather different MB designs.

I normally don't do this but... *Bump*

This problem persists on both my i7 rigs.

Same here with Gigabyte X58A-UD3R + i7 920. Moreover the timeout is very slow and ignores the com.apple.boot.plist value.

I have this on my i7920 and EX58-UD5
Chameleon interface is sluggish and loading bar seems unsure (stops and starts)
however it works great when i am in OSX.

I am glad i am not the only one...

Can a Dev look at this issue? do any of the Devs have i7/i5 hardware to test?

Thanks,

I already added a better support for those new intel CPUs into AnVAL

Hi Valve,
I updated from aserebin's 1.19 to the latest AnVal. Looks like you guys are doing some cool stuff. Unfortunately the sluggish chameleon issue persists with the AnVal loader. Please let me know if i can assist in testing or somehow create and provide useful diagnostics for you.
Thanks,

Did you do a full install? As opposed to just replacing /boot I mean.
10.9.5 - ASUS P8Z77-V Pro - i5 3570K - GTX 660 - Chameleon 2.3 svn-r2xxx
How to...
Install Chameleon: http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,649
Make your own Chameleon boot CD: http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,484.msg2131.html#msg2131

I replaced /boot and installed boot0 and boot1h manually to rdisk0 and rdisk0s2

Confirming sluggish/lagging behaviour on my Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD4 and Core i7-860. It was quite noticeable, especially when "flushing caches" :o  I could get a coffee and come back and still the mobo be reading the kexts!

But this is evident on AsereBLN 1.1.9 and also the latest Chameleon RC5 build 292 that Azimutz kindly posts in this forum. Please let us know if there's any improvement or testing needed. Thanks!
