Could not install Chameleon - Paket Receipt
« on: February 19, 2010, 05:40:56 AM »
Hi!
I've got a feeling something went wrong by installing Chameleon on an USB-Stick.
1.) I downloaded Chameleon-2.0-RC4-r640.pkg on my Mac (10.5.x)
2.) Double clicked that packet
3.) Got the Chameleon GUI Installer
4.) Start the installation and choosed (definitely!) the USB-Stick with SnowLeopard (10.6)
5.) Installation hangs by the message "Packet Receipt" (auf dt.: Paketquittung)
6.) Abort the Installation
7.) Got a file named core.pkg on the HDD of my Mac which is placed there by Chameleon

Any Ideas? What went wrong? How to fix that - Get rid off these core.pkg on my Mac HDD? And again - Yes, I choosed the USB-Stick for Install.

Zuppa

PS: I used search, but couldn't find anything. So sorry, when I ask about a well documented problem.

Chameleon RC4 is officially supplied as binaries in a download named Chameleon-2.0-RC4-r684-bin
See here: http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,1001.0.html

That package installer is not an official release and you will need to ask for support from who ever made it.

Sorry, it was early in the morning...
I used Chameleon-2.0-RC2-r640.pkg - That one came with the installer.

I also downloaded Chameleon-2.0-RC4-r684-bin but didn't used that, because of the missing installer. Thought for the first trial, a installer woud be better to use, because I have the choice to see the changes that were made on the USB-Stick.

So again: What to do? How get i rid of these core.pkg on the HDD on my Mac. This might be the bigger problem. Did not restarted the Mac yet to avoid boot problems...

Sorry, but RTFM is no answer. I used an offical release of Chameleon Chameleon-2.0-RC2-r640.pkg and got problems. So why bugging my by asking for help?

Bugging? I'm providing a solution to your problem. If you don't like it, what can I do. Just trying to help.

1. Download and extract the Chameleon 2.0 RC4 archive, copy the folder named i386 to your desktop

2. Open a Terminal Window and type cd ~/Desktop/i386

3. Type diskutil list to find out what disk number your USB stick is

4. Use sudo -s to assume root privileges.

5. Install boot0 to the MBR of the USB stick:

    fdisk -f boot0 -u -y /dev/rdiskx (where x is your USB stick)

6. Install boot1h to the bootsector of the USB stick:

dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdiskxs1 (where x is your USB stick)

7. Copy the ‘boot’ file to the root of the USB stick:

    cp boot /Volumes/your usb stick

8. Create a folder on the stick named Extra and copy a Themes folder, smbios.plist, com.apple.Boot.plist, DSDT.aml and your Extensions folder to it.

If you need more details just ask.

Thank you Gringo for your help! I will try installing Chameleon after your step-by-step-description. Hope I've got more luck than the last time...

Anyway, still got these core.pkg on my HDD. Got any ideas about that? Just deleting these file doesn't helped by now. It always came back to the root-directory. I didn't reboot by now because I'm not sure what happens if these file is still there.

Are you saying that core.pkg pops back at root by itself when you delete it?

What's in it? (Right-click, show package contents)

I haven't used the installer in a long time. IIRC someone reported a bug in it when installing to a GUID partition, hence my recommendation to install manually. Then at least you can be sure sure what goes where.

Right. If I try to delete this file, I have to authorize (Username & Password). Then I can delete this package, but it pops instantly back to root.

What's in it? (Right-click, show package contents)

The Core.pkg contains nothing. By right-click, show package contents it's empty. By checking the information (CMD+I) I get the info that filesize is 0 kb.

Interesting... I have just been doing some trials and plugged an HDD containing 10.5.8 from my hack in to a PowerMac G5. I would have originally used the Chameleon installer for this drive and have just looked at the drive in the Finder of the G5 and what do I see?

Core.pkg  (I have attached a screengrab of the Finder Window)

It has the creation date of 25th July 2009, which ties in with the date the RC2 installer was released. I have never noticed it before on the root of that HDD, though to be honest, I have never looked for it. Maybe it''s normally a hidden file? I have just deleted it for now and when I get plug my HDD back in to my hack later I will report on if it pop's back.

But as Gringo mentioned above, there were issues with the original package installer and it wasn't used for subsequent releases hence the manual install has since been recommended.
