Kernel panics caused by VoodooHDA
« on: April 10, 2010, 10:12:30 AM »
Hi guys :) This is my first topic ever! It was edited because i found the reason for the kp's i was getting (check original post attached). So, the culprit is VoodooHDA, the cause it's still a mystery to me!

Most of your KP's seem to be in the "kernel text" memory area (0xffffff8000200000 - 0xffffff8000600000) so you have something that bugs in the kernel.

humm... ok, that's helpful! I've been looking at those ranges but, can't really understand them.
I have a ton of tests to do with Chameleon so, i'll revert back to the usual kernel and see what happens. Maybe i removed something i shouldn't from the kernel, or the port is just screwed!?.. or i really need a new cpu!
Thanks Superhai :)

Hey Azi,

Don't underestimate the simplicity of simplicity :)

Take baby steps: ie when messing w/ the Booter, depend/revert to known-good kext(s), kernel(s) and vice versa.

Document all along the way, your ol' favorite pencil+paper are your best friends between reboots.

A very brief explanation about IOkit/boot time snafu can also be found here. Superhai has lots of documentation efforts under his belt. Apple's official Docs are also a prime point to start if you really want to dig deep into this.

Also, you're better off staying away from k64 till you have mastered the basics
Stop bitching, start coding or documenting or both..

Hi guys,

I read ya Rockstedy! Almost two years of OSx86 to post a topic, i'd say crawling ;D
Jokes aside, that's usually my way of working/doing things, whenever possible. Have to confess
my documenting skills have to improve, a lot but that's mostly due to lack of time.
I do use pen and paper a lot.
Will have to look at IOkit some were down the line.. i still don't have enough background to deal with it, still a very green apprentice :) but, i took a look at Superhai's stuff long ago, more than one time. I owe him some feed back :P damn time is never enough.

K64 is just fine man! So, after reading Superhai's post i checked the kernel.. the only stuff i have in it is cpu id, bcopy stuff for Pentium D (needed for emt64) and kext blacklist.. it can't get more "vanilla" than this. Anyway, i tried running -legacy, things get smother but if i poked it enough, the kp's still happen.
Then i read your "simplicity of simplicity" and "depend/revert to known-good kext(s)".. read my first post again and what's the first cause of problems i mention?! VoodooHDA.. yeah, removed the damn thing, plugged in my usb card and no more kp's  :D i don't know what's a kp since a bit after i read your post.
I still need VoodooHDA or some other solution because it's not practical for me to keep this usb card always in use.. space problems and i remember now why i didn't used in a long time, there are some "pop pop" from time to time.. i suspect of the usb keyboard/mouse. That's another talk.. will try installing it to S/L/E; i remember some improvement on the kp's a time i did that, didn't connected the dots at that time. Things get to a tolerable state when i don't do these kind of testing, that's why i suspected of Chameleon too.

So, thanks guys... after all posting the topic was helpful.

Yep, VoodooHDA behaves much better on S/L/E folder. Still kp's from time to time.. it seems ramdom but i'd call it "cyclic" instead. The more i reboot the faster i get the next one.
Better change the name of the topic and move it to voodooHDA area :D though i don't remember if the "official" driver does this.

Thanks for following up Azi

As the OP of this thread you can change the title yourself, just edit your 1st post and we'll teleport this to VoodooHDA

Keep the faith, spirit and fun around :)

Thanks for the head's up Rocksteady.
There's still the possibility of Chameleon being a part of this so, i will leave it for now as is.
Testing some "fixes" Slice added to Chameleon.. no kp's so far but it's still soon.
Will post news asap...
