Seagate ST9500423AS 500GB Drive from Asus G74SX Laptop
« on: July 04, 2011, 11:25:50 AM »
Chameleon will not install on this drive. I took it out and tried to install Chameleon from a Asus G51JX that works flawless with 10.6.8. I cannot install Chameleon on it. Well I can install CHameleon but I don't think boot1h is installing? I have tried 3 methods. The chameleon package installer, Chameleon Wizard and Manual install. Been doing this for years now and never seen anything like this. I wonder if this is a Hybrid drive and maybe boot1h won't install on it? I see the records in and out after I execute the dd command manually and it sais it installs but I get a Boot0" testing testing then boot fail. So boot0 installed with fdisk but it seems that boot1h may not be installing correctly even the output message look correct.

I took out that drive now using a seagate retail 500gb drive that is working fine. I thought the drive was bad so took it back to best buy and even with a new G74SX I have the same problem.

I have see threads on this condition with drives larger than 1.5 Terabytes but I think there is more to this since I have this same error.

If I'm not mistaken, that drive is an Advanced Format drive (4k sectors). I'm having the same problem with Seagate ST97500420AS and Western Digital WD6400BPVT harddrives. It seems chameleon doesn't play nice with advanced format drives to well ATM and the file boot1h goes *poof*.

I've read about doing the following until it sticks

Quote
Go to the folder where chameleon files are:
cd /path_to_the_i386_folder

Check if the boot1h file is still where it should:
dd if=/dev/rdiskXsY of=somefile1h bs=512 count=2

If somefile1h is empty run this again:
dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdiskXsY

Check again, if it's empty do it again.

But not had much luck myself as of yet.

I had the same problem and finally used another drive because I couldn't get my WD20EARS working.
