PLease help NOOB
« on: September 07, 2011, 07:09:24 AM »
Hello

I successfully installed SL 10.6.8 with the retail disc and all was working perfectly using the easybeast option.( tonymacosx86)
I then decided to install chameleon wizard cause I wanted to install a theme, updated chameleon ; installed and then I lost all the means to boot into the OSX partition, but worse I lost the possibility to boot onto the windows partition I had.
OSX boot hung on the apple logo screen with the gear turning all night and the windows partition was totally unreachable. The bootmbr must have been changed and I couldn't even access it with the Windows DVD.

-x ; -v ,-s, PCIRootUID=1 and more all had no effect on my OSX partition.

I've just spent 2 days reinstalling everything from scratch. I would like to try again but this time I would be really grateful if some kind soul who , contrary to me knows what he's doing , could give me some advice.

Many thanks

Run terminal.app, type diskutil list and post the output here.

Do you know where your present version of Chameleon is installed? Is it on the EFI partition (disk1s1) or on your system partition (disk1s2) ?

I am tempted to tell you to go the the TonyMac forums and post there as you are using their product. I don't know anything about multi/easybeast, we can't support 3rd party utilities here, there are too many unknowns.

But I'll try to help you replace it with Chameleon 2.0.

Do you have a folder named Extra at the root of your OS X system partition (disk1s2)?

Unzip the bdmesg executable (attached) to your desktop.
Run terminal.app and type cp ~/desktop/bdmesg /usr/bin
Reboot (you can delete bdmesg and the archive from your desktop)
Run terminal, type bdmesg and post the output here.

Many thanks for your reply

My OSX partition is on the second disk drive / EFI disk1s1 as I have totally messed up the windows disc which is now unbootable.
I have the intention of reinstalling windows later on the first disk but I hope that it won't mess up my OSX MBR....

I am using " EasyBeast is a DSDT-free solution for Core, Core 2 or Core i systems. It installs all of the essentials to allow your system to boot from the hard drive."

Yesterday I was able to install a custom theme manually but I find the chameleon utility tool would give me lots more options.
Last time I installed it the system refused to load. Do you think it's wise for me to try and go further or should I just stick to what I already have? It's just that you know Curiosity killed the cat.....

OK so here's my bdmesg output in attachment.

Cheers

Reinstalling Windows may not be necessary. You can try to rewrite the MBR on your Windows HD. Boot with your Windows 7 installation DVD and select repair. Unplug your OS X drive first!
If that doesn't work, there are other ways to rebuild the MBR - with Testdisk for example: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Just unplug your OS X drive before installing then.

Look again. disk1s1 is the "EFI" partition, it is not your OS X partition. Your OS X system partition is disk1s2. It is VERY important that you understand how to read the output from diskutil list. Otherwise you will end up hosing your installation again.

zip and attach your /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist and /Extra/smbios.plist.

From a quick look at your bdmesg, you're using HDAEnabler and VoodooHDA at the same time. This can be bad. HDAEnabler is designed to work with the AppleHDA driver that ships with OS X, VoodooHDA is a stand-alone 3rd party driver. Never use both at once, this can cause conflicts and in the worst case prevent your OS X installation from booting.
