Synaptics trackpad freezes keyboard when touched

The keyboard on my notebook (Asus M70VM-X1) seems to be recognized by the ps2 driver, but the Synaptics trackpad doesn't work. As soon as I touch the trackpad the keyboard ceases to work.

As a temporary workaround, I've disabled the 'internal pointing device' from my bios, and am using a USB mouse.
