gpt: "no such file or directory" when trying to modify the partition table

I must be missing something, but nothing I can find in the man page.
When I use gpt with the -r option (read only), I can work with it.
As soon as I try to actually do anything, I get the error message "no such file or directory", even though obviously the device exists.

What magic do I need to convince that gpt should actually modify my partition table?
Starting to feel stupid ;)
