I had this problem with my old install, but I went ahead and took the long route after nothing worked...

After completely scrapping my old install and re-installing (and not restoring from TM), GUI works...except for one really interesting issue. The GUI works perfectly with themes and everything IF I leave my 320 GB Segate FAT32 formatted storage drive unplugged until I boot into OS X, when I can proceed to safely plug it in with full functionality. It seems that for some reason that one drive prevents the entire GUI from working :O is there any way around this? I can't leave the side of my computer case open forever for me to constantly unplug and plug that drive in and out lol...

I think this might be a bug as I have absolutely no issues unless I leave the drive plugged in at boot.  I may go ahead and backup the 250GB+ of data on the drive and try to reformat/change the partition table, but I would like to avoid all of that trouble if there is an easier way.  I really need this drive as FAT32, because I use an OS X/Windows Vista (and soon to be 7) dual boot, and I use it to hold all of my media/shared files.

One solution would be converting it to NTFS from within Windows (unless you have a power failure it's totally safe, there's no data loss, I've done it myself a few times) then install Macfuse with the NTFS-3G driver, or use Paragon NTFS on the OSX side to have full read/write.

Personally I wouldn't trust a 320GB FAT32 partition anyway, the filesystem was never designed for disks or partitions of that size.

You could also try dividing it into three partitions, maybe a 320GB FAT32 partition is freaking Chameleon or OS X out. There are some tools that can do it without data loss, such as the venerable Partition Magic 8.

It sounds like it could be a bug in Chameleon though. It could also be intentional for some reason. Either way hopefully someone will appear and explain it, I'm curious too.

Thanks for the reply, I am probably going to backup the data just to be safe anyways :P  I've had some crazy things happen when I forget to backup data...

I think the choice to totally re-install everything has been beneficial so far, I mean I have a bunch of things working that weren't before, including GFX QE/CI without any injectors, my Logitech G15 keyboard LCD working with full macro functionality, and sleep.

I don't know if I trust Macfuse/NTFS-3G as well as I do normal OS read/write support, but I might try that out for a little while.  Can Ubuntu write to NTFS drives?  Good point though, FAT32 really isn't designed for partitions so huge.

I'm still in the process of backing up lol... but when I make the change I'll let everyone know how it went.  Unfortunately my computer randomly froze a second ago and I had to restart it.  I used to have this issue due to 3GB+ of RAM and JMicronIDE, but I installed patched drivers and I was 99% sure it was gone after using Rember to test my RAM while reading off an IDE (DVD) drive.  If it happens again I'll look more into it, but otherwise I think it's ok.

Will Snow Leopard be x64 (able to use 3GB+ of RAM)?  Does anyone know how much harder (or if its the same) it will be to install on PCs?

Disk Utility had an insane number of problems trying to format the drive as NTFS-3G, so I just booted up good 'ol GParted Live CD, and that did it's job.  I am currently about 2/3 done copying all the files that were on the drive from the backup drive back onto the original (now NTFS) drive.  The Chameleon GUI showed up fine on the next boot, with all my external USB drives and the problematic drive connected.  Assuming this continues to work once I've copied the files and used the drive for a while, I would like to know if it's possible to force Chameleon to ignore drives so on boot only my OS X system drive and my Windows Vista (soon to be 7) drive.  There's no reason to have my external TM drive, my multipurpose external drive, and my internal storage drive (as there is nothing to boot on them)!

Final notes.  I used GParted to format the drive as NTFS, and have migrated all of the data back onto the drive.  Chameleon sees everything now and with MacFuse/NTFS-3G I have full read/write support on the drive.  I also don't have those nasty capital letters which I would have with a FAT32 Drive (even though that's fixable with hex edits).

I still would like to know a few simple things:

1. Can you tell Chameleon to ignore certain drives on the GUI boot menu by editing some plist?

2. I found out that Snow Leopard will be x64, but I was wondering if we (the OSx86 community) knows the difficulty of installing Snow Leopard on Intel based machines already with the betas.  Will the move from Leo to Snow be easy?

That's in the top three of the most frequently asked questions about Chameleon 2.0.

Unfortunately this is not possible in RC1, you will need to install a more recent version of Chameleon.
