EBIOS Error 0x09?
« on: February 24, 2010, 07:34:31 AM »
Trying to do an install of 10.6 with a boot disc pre-made for my specific motherboard (prepared with BootCDmaker and uses Chameleon 2 RC3), that others have used no problem..  I get to the point where I'm supposed to swap out the boot disc with the retail OS X DVD, at which point it sees the DVD and changes the icon for it accordingly.  I'm then supposed to hit enter of course to start the install process.  The problem is, the left side of the screen starts filling up with EBIOS read errors. Error 0x09.

I'm using a SATA DVD (LG Blu-ray disc multi), and what I did notice - when it reads the boot disc, the led on the DVD player lights up. When I replace it with the OS X dvd and hit F5 (and it replaces the boot disc icon with the OS X disc icon), it also lights up. When I hit enter to start the install process though, it does not light up. What does light up when the left side of the screen is filling up with the EBIOS errors is the hard drive light on the front of the case, blinking on and off in time to the EBOOT errors appearing. Which I'm assuming should not be happening, i.e. it should just be accessing the DVD at that point?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I couldn't find anything in regards to 0x09 EBIOS errors.

Burn error or media defect.

Try a different burning app, try other media, burn at the slowest speed supported by drive and media.

Also google 'ebios error'.

It's a retail OS X disc, it's not burned.  Could the retail disc be defective?

Ok, got a new retail OS X disc, bought a new sata drive to install this on, and unplugged all my other drives one by one. After I unplugged the two external USB drives, the EBIOS errors went away.

The install started and got to the first install screen (the english selection screen) - only my mouse and keyboard don't work. I have a Lotitech wave keyboard and MX1100 cordless mouse. So I tried a ps2 keyboard and of course that didn't work. I'm assuming I need a USB keyboard and usb mouse at t his stage?

I have a Logitech Wave cordless mouse/keyboard combo and it works fine with retail OS X. Since you also had to unplug your external USB drives I'm guessing the problem is more likely to be with your USB ports not working the way OS X wants them to work.

Did it work fine during the install?  Because I know they're supposed to work fine after OS X is installed.  And it was one specific USB drive that was causing it, not both.

Yes, it works fine during install.

Ok, I found that if I let them set for a minute or so on the english language selection screen, the logitech keyboard and mouse suddenly started working.

Went through the install, did updates, tried to install some kext's and now I'm dead in the water again.

Followed the directions here:
http://www.insanelymac.com/2009/02/what-is...o-install-kext/

Copied them over to /System/Libraries/Extensions, chmod'd them all to 755 and then ran Disk Utilities and repaired permissions as well. Removed Extensions.mkext as it stated as well.

Went to reboot, in safe mode am getting kernel panics with your sleep enabler. Specifically - "Version mis-match between Kernel and CPU", then it does a backtrace and specifically mentions it's sk.triaxis.kext.SleepEnabler kext I added, then it just freezes and sits at system up time.

In non-safe mode boot, it's the graphics kext I added that causes a kernel panic (com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000), and sits at the system up time statement as well.

What do I do now? I was going to try and just blow out and reinstall everything, but it won't even let me do that. Back to getting ebios errors if I try booting the install disc, and I'm guessing the now formatted hard drive with the full mac Install is causing it since that's the only change from before.

Link doesn't work, have you tried asking for help there?

Once you copy a kext to to /S/L/E Chameleon isn't involved, the OSX matching logic controls what does or does not get loaded.

Have you tried single user mode (-s)?  This would allow you to delete or rename the kext(s) causing the panic if you are comfortable with using the command line.

You can use a linux live CD to reformat the disk you installed SL on if that is what is causing your ebios errors.

This thread is getting close to being about installation issues and not about Chameleon, we are trying to keep these forums about Chameleon and not to be a general OSX86 forum.

Wierd, shouldn't have showed up like that, it's not an insanelymac.com link:

Ok, thanks.  Wasn't sure about that.

I'll give the -s mode a try next and do the live linux cd as a last resort.  Thanks!

Not a problem, I appreciate your help and will keep it more Chameleon related.

Ahh, now I see.  One of the benefits of Chameleon is that you can avoid having to update /System/Library/Extensions (/S/L/E) as described in that article for a lot of your modified kexts.

If your kext will load from the /Extra/Extensions (/E/E) folder you don't have to put it in /S/L/E. Unfortunately not all kexts will load from /E/E,  Always try a new kext in /E/E first, then check the logs and use kextstat to see if it loaded successfully, if it did then you're done.

Also if you put Chameleon in a small separate partition ( a lot of people use the EFI partition) and turn journaling off you can update all of your Chameleon settings and the kexts in /E/E from a Linux Live CD or rescue system (Parted Magic or SystemRescueCD)  that has HFS support and tools installed.

Another way to play it safe is to keep a Chameleon boot CD with your latest working configuration. Then you can always boot the system with that when things go wrong. Best use for CD-RWs yet..
