RC3 and Video ROM
« on: September 08, 2009, 01:34:01 PM »
Hello,

anyone had success on loading of alternate VideoROM image?

I have a nvidia 9800 gt, can I use some apple's VideoROM (if there is any) to have ultimate compatibility?

RC3 and Video ROM

Hey guys,

I'm trying to use the new Chameleon RC3 with the new video ROM option.

I have a XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 512mb. Perviously, I could not boot into the GUI using RC2 and netkas' modified booter unless I used ATY_Init or EVOEnabler. If I just used an EFI string using RC2, I could not boot into GUI. From what I understand, I need to use an injector (which is why ATY_Init/EVOEnabler worked).

So, I went into Windows and made a dump of my ROM and put the ROM in my /Extra folder. I deleted EVOEnabler and I changed my com.apple.Boot.plist:
Code: [Select]
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>VBIOS</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>VideoROM</key>
<string>/Extra/Radeon4870.bin</string>

However, I can't boot to the GUI. Did I do this correctly? Is there a way to use the ATY,bin_image from ATY_Init's Info.plist? It is acting exactly how it did using EFI strings in my Boot.plist previously. I think I need the modified ROM included, but it is all hex in the plist.

Any ideas? Am I doing this wrong?

After some quick + dirty testing this works as advertised  :)

@ all with a 8800GT:

You can find Kabyl's legacy part (PC part) of the Mac Pro 8800 GT dump, deep inside the labyrinths of insanelymac. This means that you can test the VideoROM option with (at least) 2 different ROMs (your stock one, and the one that Kabyl extracted)

I've been trying to get this to work but it doesn't seem to be loading the ROM. Here's what I have in my com.apple.Boot.plist:

   <key>VideoROM</key>
   <string>/Extra/8800GT.ROM</string>
        <key>VBIOS</key>
   <string>Yes</string>

With the rom file in /Extra.

I tried using the Wait=Yes option and I don't see any indication that it is loading the ROM. Should I see something?

Is it possible that this works on some main boards and not others because it is related to the same device tree issue that causes the GraphicsEnabler option to fail on some boards?

There are a couple of threads in the bug reports that talk about that issue and a solution posted by user BuildSmart near the end of this thread

http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,608.0.html

May not be related.  Just a thought.
