Invalid Argument in Terminal during Installation?
« on: September 19, 2009, 01:41:31 AM »
Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this post belongs here, and if it doesn't let me know and I'll move it...

Can someone help me on this issue?

I've been following instructions on the README that comes with Chameleon, as well as some of the other well documented websites on installing chameleon, and I still cannot get my USB drive to be recognized on boot by my HP laptop.

I suspect the following is the issue is the problem:

During the terminal installation process, I get to the step where I type:

sudo dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdisk3s1

and this message is returned:

dd: /dev/rdisk3s1: Invalid argument
1+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes transferred in 0.005706 secs (0 bytes/sec)

by the time I finish the rest of the Chameleon installation process and plug the USB drive into my HP laptop I get this message on boot:
Non-System disk or disk error
replace and strike any key when ready

Details about what I am using:
Laptop running Terminal and Disk Utility:  MacBook (black) on SnowLeopard 10.6
Chameleon Version:  RC3r658
USB Drive:  Samsung S1 Mini
Source of Instructions (following these to the 'T'):
(not supposed to link, so please search LifeHacker for How to Build a Hackintosh with Snow Leopard from Start to Finish)
Destination PC Laptop:  HP 520

Please, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Yoodoo,

Do us a favor, cut and paste your terminal commands starting with
'diskutil list' into a  code window.

Its dangerous answering your question without seeing your exact setup in this case. (we are mucking about with boot sectors afterall....)

I assume that when you say

...I get to the step where I type:
That you were able to erase and mount the EFI partition normally, your terminal paste will give us the information we need to better assist you.
-----------
I will let you know when trying to go to a USB stick, I had some issues as well, but they boiled down to writing the correct file system to the boot partition and getting it mounted before attempting dd commands.

lastly, how big is your USB drive?  (silly question probably, but you have to check everything...)
