Graphics Mode Resolution Ignored On Some NVidia Cards
« on: November 16, 2009, 08:34:01 PM »
I recently updated from an 8600GT to an 8800GTX (I got it for free)
I am using the built in video injection from Chameleon, and have specified my resolution in my com.apple.boot.plist.

This had been working just fine since a day after Chameleon 2 Beta (RC1) was released although I had used an efi string in my boot.plist until the very nice auto injection was added.

My problem is that during boot, I get what looks like 1024x768 even though my screen is 1680x1050 and nothing has changed in my software config.  After boot, OSX corrects the issue and detects both monitors, but my boot screen is displayed in the wrong resolution.

Obviously, this is purely cosmetic, but I'd be interested to know why it's doing this, and if there's any workaround.

20 views, no replies.

Maybe I could clear up the problem a bit - I was using an 8600GT with no issues.  Switched to an 8800GTX and now the boot is done in 1024x768 even though I have specified 1680x1050 in my com.apple.boot.plist located in my Extra folder.  Nothing changed except my video card.

Once OSX loads to the logon screen though, I get the proper resolution.

This could be my fault, but I figured it's probably some incompatibility with Chameleon since OSX handles it just fine and since my config is the same as was working with the 8600GT.

Hi Terc,

Does Chameleon display your 1680x1050 resolution with the ?video boot command?

Thanks for the reply zef.
Yes, it does, but oddly, only 1680x1050x8

It's a VESA 3 card, and while I admit I don't know much about VESA, it's odd that an nvidia 8600GT would support 1680x1050 and an 8800GTX wouldn't.  I thought they were very similar.

I did try using 1680x1050x8 in my com.apple.boot.plist, with no luck.
Honestly, there are no variables that have changed other than the card.  I also tried booting from my backup USB (I keep it around in case my primary fails for whatever reason)

I just wanted to say I've been having the same problem since around September or so. I was hoping it would be fixed when I did a fresh install but that hasn't been the case. It wasn't the video card I changed, but the monitor. I went from 1680x1050 to 1920x1080.

I'm using a GTX 275. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P and even the Gigabyte Boot Logo isn't the correct resolution even though it used to be.

I am very interested in this also.  I am using an Nvidia GTX+ and Gigabyte EP45 UP3.

It boots into 1680 x 1050 resolution for most of the BIOS.  But when it boots into Chameleon is boots into 1280 x 1024 stretched to fill 1680 x 1050.

Same question here, 8800GTX, 1680x1050x8 only. I there some way to fix it?

No, not really. You have to reprogram your video bios to include other vesa video modes.

But if there is no more modes, how leopard runs perfectly?

It has it own videocard drivers so it doesn't depend on vesa.

This issue has been resolved.  I like to follow up on my tickets I open in case someone else stumbles across them in the future.

It was a video card bios issue.  PNY's 8800GTX OC Edition bios did not support my resolution in VESA.  Fix is described here: http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,1497.msg7540.html#msg7540
