Title: System Profiler & smbios.plist
Post by: eyvind on May 29, 2009, 07:12:06 AM
I just updated to 10.5.7... Everything is running smoothly and perfectly. All the USB functions work (they didn't even need to be patched). The one problem I have is that in system profiler, under the hardware tab, it says: There was an error while gathering this information.

It worked  in 10.5.6. I have read on some other places that people are having the same problem. THere some people fixed it by swithcing to SMBIOSResolver. I don't want to try that right now, since i enjoy the fact that I can customize Smbios options in Smbios.plist. has anyone else got the System Profiler in 10.5.7 to work?

BTW, this is my setup:
P5W DH Deluxe
2x 1GB transcend ram
Core 2 Duo E6700
8800GT (working with EFI)

Yep, to be exact I had it working since 10.5.4 and never broke between updates. All from /Extra/smbios.plist (http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,327.msg1230.html#msg1230). I didn't go nuts about it as it's all about aesthetics, I just filled in the proper RAM info.

Have fun/experiment with the relevant key/string in your /Extra/com.apple/Boot.plist while issuing ioreg -l |grep board-id from the Terminal  :):
Code: [Select]
<key>SMBIOSdefaults</key>
<string>Yes</string>
or
Code: [Select]
<key>SMBIOSdefaults</key>
<string>No</string>

Mine didn't break either after updating. I was using smbios.plist with vanilla AppleSMBIOS.kext in 10.5.6.

Some stay with SMBIOSResolver.kext to fix the UUID error 35 issue but that just complicates things imo.
A superior fix for error 35 is using UUID.kext with a UUID generated by UUIDGenerator.app.

Hmm thanks for the replies.:)
I'll try and see what happens as soon as I get home (i'm on vacation right now).

I read so many posts here from people who seem to understand what smbios is for, and how to set it up. Where did they find the information? The Chameleon release doesn't seem to come with any information about it.

^ You can find some info here: smbios.plist documentation and uuid injection? (http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,315.0.html)

Some more (started with a misleading title) here: CFGetHostUUIDString: unable to determine UUID for host. Error: 35 (http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,250.0.html)

There should be some info over at insanelymac's labyrinth if you dare (might be under a title "Big Problem PLLZZ HELP")

anyone know if this will only make a cosmetic change in system profiler or will actually resolve issues with the mac reporting itslef to drm systems e.g. via microsoft silverlight

I beleive some software does actually use these values. Somewhere in the labyrinth at InsanelyMac, i read a post about someone who reinstalled OSX86 with different "About This Mac" values, then some expensive software he owned told him that his computer was not licensed, or something similar.

Anyway for my previous problems - im just about to install 10.5.7 on a completely clean system, with a Vanilla OSX partition and EFI for all the hacks (currently no version specific hacks, only fake plists).
