Title: Manual Install Chameleon 2.0 RC5 r750 on SW Raid Snow Lepard retail
Post by: iPerplexity on April 16, 2011, 03:30:32 AM
I'll admit I am a noob when it comes to OSX, but I have gone through many hours of reading guides, tutorials, forums, documentation and I still cant figure this out.

Im running a single XEON E5620, on a S5520SCR mobo with 12Gb ram and na Diamond ATI Radeon HD5770. I boot into OSX installer with iBoot, create 200Gb software raid 1 partition. So I have a drive list like this:

/dev/disk0
 0: GUID partition scheme
 1: EFI
 2: Apple_RAID
 3: Apple_Boot

/dev/disk1
 0: GUID partition scheme
 1: EFI
 2: Apple_RAID
 3: Apple_Boot

/dev/disk3
0: Apple_HFSX  (Snow Leopard Install location)

Ive installed Boot0 to rdisk0 and rdisk1 and Boot1h into both Apple_Boot partitions (disk0s3, and disk1s3) and added Boot to both boot volumes (on disk0s3 and disk1s3)

Heres where the instructions fail me... i think.

I have to add a folder "Extra" to the root of both Apple_Boot partitions, and copy a com.apple.boot.plist into them. Do I copy that from the /library/preferences/systemconfiguration/boot.plist from the Snow leopard install drive or from the com.apple.boot.R/library/preferences/systemconfiguration/boot.plist?
I have added rd=uuid boot-uuid=xxxxxxxxx...blah blah to the plist.

I have tried so many different configurations, and what happens is I get the chameleon menu to select the partition to boot from enter PCIRootUID=1 (As I need to to boot from iBoot CD) and hit enter and... REBOOT!

What am I missing?

PCIRootUID is not related to booting.

It is in the sense that the EFI tables set up by chameleon and passed to the kernel are modified by the PCIRootUID=1 modifier.
So I know that I am getting through at least the first and second stage boot loaders... does anybody have any relevant answers as to why the third stage boot process or the kernel won't load? Or is the process getting derailed at an earlier stage?

It looks to me like you are saying that you need to set PCIRootUID=1 in order to boot from CD. Maybe I'm wrong, either way it is not "relevant" (to use your own words) to your problem. If the thing reboots instantly, it will reboot instantly without you setting PCIRootUID=1 as well. You can't use that to gauge 'how far it gets'.

There's a software RAID w/Chameleon guide on the Genius Bar sub-forum over on InsanelyMac.

It would be nice to have one here but nobody has written one yet.

Maybe you can write one once you get some relevant answers.
