Title: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Enzo on February 09, 2010, 02:19:55 PM
(http://kttns.org/q3mmy) (http://kttns.org/ytjlz)
(http://kttns.org/mdlhz) (http://kttns.org/rhmmj)
A simple theme I created for myself, with some minimalist eye candy, now uploading for anyone who might enjoy it. Inspired by a great psdtut, with a few modifed icons, and others built from scratch. I dual boot OS X and Win7, so I apologize if any of the other icons look rushed.

Things to Note:

Installation Instructions:

Optional Customization:

Thanks to cizko for his great Fontmaker App (http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,510.0.html)
A big thanks to Blackosx for his fantastic guides.
This theme supports Lizard app by Sonotone (http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,842.0.html).
Now @ Version 1.3 with further icon/text tweaks & ALL CAPS + fixes.

For some reason, mine still reverts back to the regular boot screen and not yours. Nice theme though

For some reason, mine still reverts back to the regular boot screen and not yours. Nice theme though
and it is enabled properly through com.apple.boot.plist in /Extra? Perhaps a spelling mistake in the string?
Otherwise it's rather odd.

On my to do list: A general, alternate Linux icon.
EDIT: Done, Hard to do just an outline of a penguin =P

I'm confused. does this theme replace the grey apple screen when booting into snow leopard? like after i select osx, does another custom screen come up? if so, what should I edit/
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Enzo on February 10, 2010, 09:38:57 AM
As far as I know, the only thing that you can change from that loading screen is the apple icon in the center. This theme does replace it, with a black apple icon, same as in these previews. No other aspect can really be changed, though it is possible to make the single image big enough to take up the whole screen, so as to appear completely different.

Thanks.
To use this theme:
Copy the downloaded Folder "DType" to your /Extra/Themes/
Then just add/change the following key/string:
In your com.apple.boot.plist (Located in /Extra)
<key>Theme</key>
<string>THEME_NAME</string> (In this case, DType)

this theme is very nice. But the word, "welcome to os x" seem a little too OSX-er. Maybe you could change it to something like "Chameleon 2 DType Theme" or something.

Absolutely beautiful theme.

Also, thanks for releasing it with a proper folder name.  I've grown a little tired of all the other theme releases using the folder name  "default"  I realize it's caused a couple people an issue, but it's the right way to do a release, so thanks! :D

Thanks for pointing this out Terc as this might have been because my Creating Themes guide (http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,388.0.html) did show adding the theme files to the default folder. I have now changed it to reflect using correctly named theme folders and the 'Theme' boot option (to be honest, when I wrote it back in May last year I didn't even know about the 'Theme' boot option and now I will give the guide an overhaul during the next few weeks.)  8)

A simple customized text would be easy to do ;-). Lmk if you have a specific request.

yes, please customize the text to "Lenovo S10". That's my netbook :)

Also, when i boot my osx in verbose, the text scrolling is light grey. In contrast with the white background, it is very hard to see. Would be nice to have it in darker grey.

Thanks.

Here you go abubin: http://kttns.org/wi3y2
I'll leave that up for a while ;-)

Regarding the font color, I will try to look at that later, see if it's too light. In the mean time, you can go here (http://www.cyberdisk.de/) and simply create whatever console font you'd like. The font I used was Futura BT-Light, size 8. You can select any color as well, then just download, and rename it to font_console.png and drop it in the theme folder.

Has anyone stretched icons like me?
In my boot.plist the res is 1680x1050; the theme is untouched; my monitor has 1680x1050 as native res.

hmm, I don't know why that would be, sorry. It's only with this theme? If not, maybe a graphics issue? Anyone else care to chime in?

Hey enzo do you think you could possibly make a logo that says ASUS P5QL PRO instead of welcome to osx please?
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Enzo on February 15, 2010, 09:19:01 AM
Here you go consume: http://kttns.org/jnwy3

For further requests, remember that there are 3 text areas in the logo. The Red, Black, and the Light Grey sub text. So if you want to be very specific, and not leave it up to me to assume how you want it exactly, specify which parts you want in red/black/grey etc. =)

Ok, it works and it's AWESOME! Thank you soo much. But one thing, i'm confused on how to remove the "press any key to load windows" thing. How can i remove this when the backwards progessbar is showing?
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Enzo on February 16, 2010, 03:26:32 AM
Are you referring to the text under the progressbar? That reads "Press any key to enter startup options" and it cannot be removed from any theme as long as you use a countdown timer/default boot partition.
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: consume on February 16, 2010, 03:58:45 AM
ok and one last question, is the chameleon bootloader supposed to boot at 1024x768? I thought that this theme started in 1680x1050..
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Enzo on February 16, 2010, 06:14:30 AM
Yes, it is set for 1680x1050. As I mentioned in the original post, you can adjust it via the theme plist. What is your native resolution?
If it still does not work at your desired resolution. Have a look at: http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,1181.0.html

I also changed the font and color. Thanks for the guide. But there are spaces between each line in the fonts. How do I remove the carriage return line after each font line? Tried looking at theme.plist but no go.

Post by: Enzo on February 20, 2010, 09:42:31 AM
Sorry, I'm not sure what I know what you're referring to, are you saying there's something wrong with the font in the console? If so, that wouldn't make sense to me =P, I wouldn't be able to help =/.

But there are spaces between each line in the fonts. How do I remove the carriage return line after each font line?
This is just a guess, but I think abubin might be referring to the blank space between the red dots and the ascender height (top of the text) and the descender height (bottom of text) to the bottom of the file. This blank space, when combined in more than one line, might account for the effect of a carriage return?

Really cool theme, but would it be possible to get a version where anything written on the command line wasn't in caps?      It makes hard to do those commands that have caps and regular letters...
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Enzo on April 07, 2010, 05:36:33 AM
^^ Sorry, guess I didn't think of that =P
I don't known if it requires a whole other version. If you use the console a lot, I recommend creating a font file that suits you best.
You can create a font file here: FontMaker App by Cizko (http://www.cyberdisk.de/)
I used the font: Futura BT-Light
You can specify any color you want, as well as size too. In your case, don't check the "All Caps" option.
Then just simply rename the downloaded png file to font_console.png and replace it in the theme folder.

Loving this theme, personally I think its one of the best out there.

Ive installed it on a Asus 1000he netbook and it just doesnt look like the one on the front page, I dont get the "PRESS ANY KEY TO ENTER STARTUP OPTIONS" and the red boot bar thing is in between the logo and what I have called my partition.

I tried changing the resoultion in the plist file to 1024 x 600 but that doesnt seem to do anything.

Has any one got any idea??

Prime,
Sure thing, will update this post as soon as I get a chance.
EDIT:
Here you go: SONY VAIO (http://kttns.org/juzyg) logo

Floss_LUC,
I believe the problem is that the logo is too big for the small resolution. Which I don't fully understand, seeing as the logo image is smaller than the width of the netbook's screen, i.e. 1024. However, all other elements should be fine, seeing as the icons are the same size as the default theme. They are relatively small @ 96x128 res. Furthermore, if the display resolution is properly set, and displayed accordingly (Not stretched, or other gfx issues). You can simply resize the logo.png file, I recommend using Photoshop or something similar to keep the file sizes small. If not, I can post a small res on here later. Hopefully that fixes the other discrepancies for you as well.
EDIT: Try one from here: DType Logos - For Netbooks (http://www.mediafire.com/?wyjhr2fmmnm)
I cropped to a more efficient space and resized, it includes the 4 variations that are in the theme itself.

Enzo, this is an excellent theme and displays your great taste in style and "less-is-more" substance indeed!  I'm trying to use your theme on my Toshiba NB205 Quad boot, though my continued efforts in iResizing it for the netbook's typical 1024x600 (and preserve the quality) is quite challenging, heh. :)

Say, do you think you could provide a boot title saying something generic like "Boot Menu" ?  In any case, thanks so much!
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Enzo on May 30, 2010, 02:48:33 AM
Thanks voodoofanatic =)

Changing the res in the theme.plist should do it, and perhaps coupled with the updated logos for netbook (all in the original post). Also, will update this post with your requested logo attached as soon as I get the chance to do it.

Edit: here you go: http://kttns.org/zmmju
3 Variations for you, sized for netbooks, let me know if it works out. =)

Thanks so much , Enzo!  Logos look great and I'll definitely put them to full use.  You and Blackosx have been outstanding in supporting us grateful fans!  I only wish I was half as talented/knowledgeable as you and the many others who've contributed these fantastic themes...

BTW, for anyone interested, I did resize (using iResizer) the DType png files for my 1024x600 netbook resolution using "percentage," and I found that trimming (reducing) width to 75% while keeping everything else the same worked out a near-perfect proportional match with Enzo's original images.  Can't wait to use the theme on my desktop hackintosh.  8)

Hey Enzo, first of all, thanks for the great theme! Second, I'm having some problems.. When it loads it seems that it's 1/4 off screen, and I have to adjust my monitor and then readjust it again when OS X loads. Do you have any idea what the cause could be? I looked at what you said and the info on vesa monitors but I don't think that's the cause, I've never faced this problem before in any OS or bootloader. Fyi, my Monitor is a PHILIPS 170S (dual screen) at 1280x1024. Here's my boot.plist for reference too:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
   <key>Kernel</key>
   <string>mach_kernel</string>
   <key>Kernel Flags</key>
   <string>arch=i386</string>
   <key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
   <string>Yes</string>
   <key>Timeout</key>
   <string>0</string>
   <key>Legacy Logo</key>
   <string>Yes</string>
   <key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
   <string>Yes</string>
   <key>Default Partition</key>
   <string>hd(0,1)</string>
   <key>Theme</key>
   <string>DType</string>
   <key>Boot Banner</key>
   <string>No</string>
   <key>screen_width</key>
   <string>1280</string>
   <key>screen_height</key>
   <string>1024</string>
</dict>
</plist>

I hope you can help! :D

Thanks!

PS. I, like you, have OSX and Win7 set up - I like the 'press any key' to boot win thing, but is there a way to boot windows by pressing any key... surely you mean press enter?
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Enzo on June 12, 2010, 03:11:05 AM
Kieters,
Certainly strange, have you tried other themes and have had them work successfully at the same res?

Regarding the "any key" text under the logo, it doesn't make much sense if you have Timeout set to 0 heh. I myself use a 3 sec delay.
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Kieters on June 12, 2010, 04:41:22 AM
The Default theme seems fine, but yours and the other I tried (big icon win7/snosx/ubuntu) both do the same thing! :(
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Enzo on June 12, 2010, 04:43:15 AM
Perhaps it's only the logo? In which case you can try resizing it. Or use one from the netbook set. The default theme uses a very small logo size. The icons however, I believe are the same as in this theme.
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Kieters on June 12, 2010, 10:51:59 PM
I too thought this - but no, it's almost missing some background. Like I said, the default  (iBoot) one that I'm using is fine - perhaps there is some setting in the default theme that counteracts this error? I'm sure exactly sure how theming works for chameleon. I've noticed I also face this problem when booting with a few random bootable linux ditros - Ubuntu is fine, but I'm using the Parted Magic disk now and I had the same problem when I booted this - it's like the screen coordinates were off.
Title: Re: [Theme] DType - Stylistically Simple
Post by: Enzo on June 12, 2010, 11:20:31 PM
Well it kinda seems like it is res related/vesa support as we thought originally. The default theme uses 1024x768 res. If that works, then changing this theme to that should display just as well. Though the logo might be a little big for it.

v1.3 now
Added alternate linux icon (simply forgot to include it last time)
theme.plist configured to display 5 partitions max (was @ 2 and caused confusion)
Slight font changes, they are a little more visible now
menu_selection redone
Added alternate background image

See the new background in action!:
(http://kttns.org/i5mtq) (http://kttns.org/zm0nt)

Download in OP and here: http://www.mediafire.com/?koznefji54n

Should the new background be the default? ;-)
Though I'd add other resolutions for flexibility, background was created for 1680x1050.
