Title: [Theme] iCham2 - It's Magical =P
Post by: Enzo on January 18, 2011, 04:44:43 AM
(http://kttns.org/nhzd) (http://kttns.org/m2qxy)
Click for Full Preview.  ;) Now on to the fine print... =P

I always thought iOS lent itself nicely to a simple Cham theme, just needed a frame, and that's where the iPad came in. Came together easily after that, though the hardest part (By Far) is having to adjust for the various bugs/quirks Chameleon has. Once finished, I couldn't help but mimic typical Apple advertising.  ;D

Technical Notes

-Icons are adjusted to look as close to the mockup as possible in the options screen. Some effects look exaggerated because of this in the first/countdown screen.

-By Default, the theme uses an invisble/hidden font_small, so you will not be able to see your partition names. If you need the functionality, there is an alternate font_small included. The obligatory Ubuntu alternate is also included.

-The PSD was simplified so it can be easier to use, hopefully it's all you'd need. It's easy to drop in a wallpaper in the appropriate folder.

Thank you.

Sorry if this is an obvious question but basically to make this theme work, all i have to do is open the PSD and resize it to my screen resolution and save and replace the 1920x1200 with mine right?

Post by: Enzo on January 18, 2011, 09:25:32 AM
That would work... heh but I think I can be of help here...

The iPad in the image is sized to fit down to 1280x1024. What res are you running? Easiest way would be to crop the image around the iPad, leaving the iPad alone, unless you res is smaller than 1280x1024. I think I'll whip up a smaller background here and update this post.

Edit:
Try this background.png sized for 1680x1050. http://cl.ly/44iu
I believe this displayed correctly on 1280x1024 though it may need a reposition of the devices in the theme.plist. device_pos_y is currently @ 70% in the plist. You'll want < 70 to raise the devices, or > 70 to lower them. LMK if this works, thanks.

Thanks mate. My resolution size is stucked on crappy values of 1366 x 768 which is default for almost all laptops now.
Will try it when i get the chance! Well done on the theme. :) Great to see people still working on themes!

Title: Re: [Theme] iCham2 - It's Magical =P
Post by: Enzo on January 18, 2011, 10:35:01 AM
Yeah, 1366x768 is pretty common in laptops these days. I am weighing two options for anything "under" 1280x1024. I can resize everything down, just as anyone would do with the supplied theme folder, though I would do it with the resource files which would yield better results.

The second option is one that I'd like to implement for netbook's res of 1024x600. My idea for this small res is to cut the iPad and background out, and have the entire 1024x600 be only the screen within the iPad (cropped a tad).

Feedback is welcomed, thanks.

Thanks guys =).

Edit:
If anyone running 1680x1050 can help me out in letting me know if the 1680x1050 background image (found here:http://cl.ly/44iu) works fine with the rest of the theme, i.e. the devices are properly aligned in the second screen it would be of great help, and I can then provide a full theme link download for that specific res. Thank you.

Hi Enzo

Here's a screenshot from loading the theme at 1680x1050.
I made it using VMWare Fusion - you should try it.. it's great for testing themes and I know you'll benefit from it (link) (http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,1505.msg7409.html#msg7409)

ah, Thanks Blackosx! Very helpful indeed, got it working already =). Will update OP with a 1680x1050 version packaged theme.

Edit:

Here is a packaged 1680x1050 Theme Folder: http://cl.ly/46qv. I've tested it, and it is optimized for the res!
I just realized I'd probably have to include a PSD for every res =P.

No problem and I'm happy to help you out.

As for the need to supply a PSD for each background, that's a step further than I ever went. I understand why you want to do so, as you want things to fit pixel perfect and sometimes leaving the user to adjusting a value, in this instance device_pos_x, might still not get the device icon placed correctly? in which case moving the background around is the answer.

Though you are creating more work for yourself so how about just supplying three high-res PSD background images for the main screen ratios and let the user resize them as they require? Also I guess worth considering is not all users are going to be able to load up a PSD file to make changes or some won't even want to.

Best of luck in your choice, but keep up the lovely work Enzo :)

So I had to reinstall chameleon rc5 and when I did, I chose this theme. I resized it following the guide. It seems to work just fine except for one thing. The custom boot image doesn't appear when I get past the bootloader. Why is this?

This sounds like an issue outside of the theme itself, do you see the classic grey apple logo?

btw, what res are you running?

The only thing I can think of is if perhaps you have the classic grey apple key set in the boot.plist (I do believe there is a key/string to enable it). Other than that, as long as the boot.png is in the theme folder, it should work. Unless a reinstall of Cham is necessary...

Hello valv,
I do remember your request, and I apologize for the delay! To be honest I started it, and then got a little stuck (having to do with the positioning and the idea of trying to keep the Chamatic theme flexible) =P so it's been sitting on my to-do pile. I think I can make some time real soon =), will let you know.

Weird issue here that i dont have with other themes ;)

I replaced font_small with the alternative so i could see my partition names, but all my hfs partitions all have the same name when i get in the selection menu of chameleon with this theme: Mac OS X. This is a problem, because i dont know which drive is my main mac os x drive, lion or my test drive :s.... (the same problem with other drive formats)

Do I need to change something in theme.plist/theme folder to enable drive name recognition?

Is it the text that appears over the icon's reflection? If so, that text is really just part of the icon image and perhaps the unhidden font alternates aren't kicking in. IIRC, there are 2 alt fonts. Make sure you renamed font_small-VISIBLE-DEVICES.png to just font_small.png and dragged it into the main theme folder.

Note, the then visible text should appear under the iPad's screen: (http://cl.ly/6OEZ/Screen_shot_2011-05-01_at_3.06.35_PM.png)

Updated OP
Only really updated the background/iPad. There is now the white available as an alternate. There are a coupla different wallpapers in there, but this update is all about the PSD! I didn't want to take the time to create new device icons =P. I could create them time permitting and at an as needed/requested basis. I'd upload the PSD, but I'd have to do the same as I did for the background, spit out one for each res (Yes there's essentially a version for every res), and simplify it considerably, too much work all at once for me to bother with haha.

First of all, I really love your work Enzo! Really amazing!

I have one question, I resized it to 2560*1440 and all went fine.
Now I add the line from the subfolder to get the names below my drives (got mulitple OSX versions running) but since then the boot icons appears just half on and half below the edge of the iPad.
Furthermore around 25% of the white background (background behind the iPad, so not the picture in the iPad) isgrey, while the rest is whit (which is the correct background color)

I tried to resize it to 1920*1080, then the icons are on the right place but the iPad is to large for my screen.

Any tips how I can get the icons at the right place with keeping the 2560*1440 resolution?
Title: Re: [Theme] iCham2 - It's Magical =P
Post by: Enzo on August 28, 2012, 07:57:59 PM
Hello, and thanks =).

Looks like you were close the first time. Only the font alignment was just a tad off. I remember having to play with alignment a lot to get it right for each resolutions. I remember on every other resolution, I had to fix the alignment by adjusting the background image to get a better result. Now I can't seem to find what value I changed in the theme.plist. Maybe it was just device_pos_y, try increasing that from 70% to move it down, or reduce it to move it up. It may be that the text distance from the device icon is unchangeable and the way to put any distance in between was artificially by making either the device icon png bigger (by giving it a big transparency area). I hope this makes sense.

As for the background, assuming it's outputting at 2460x1440 (does it? I thought this was not a vesa standard). If it is, then maybe the background image simply isn't an adequate size. I can maybe provide you with a 2560x1440 source background image ,which you can then play with... hmm.

Also, I see you have multiple Mac versions running. Cham these days has support, so it's possible to have a different icon for different OS X versions, as seen by my LoginToLion theme. I realize this may facilitate not needing the device names at all. However I'd have to update this theme with new icons, and I don't know if there's enough interest... However.. I can get obsessed about these things =P. An easy way to bring support is for me to simply change the fake text in the device icons. That way I don't really have to create new icons, simply churn out ones that say 10.4/5/6/7/8.
Title: Re: [Theme] iCham2 - It's Magical =P
Post by: Gnobama on August 28, 2012, 08:44:56 PM
I don't know if it's outputting 2560*1440, I don't think this is a VESA standard either, but without the alternate small font it was perfect.

If you see a change to change the fake text to 10.4/5/6/7/8 or Tiger/ Leopard/ Snow Leopard/ Lion/ Mountain lion (which I prefer but I don't have nothing to want of course:-) it would be great!
Title: Re: [Theme] iCham2 - It's Magical =P
Post by: Enzo on August 28, 2012, 09:47:10 PM
Sure, I'll churn those out sometime today.

Edit: Here you go, though I got lazy and didn't do RAID versions =P. It's a simple way to add OS X Detection. Only the fake text under the square icons is replaced to: Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion. The icon remains the same otherwise. Also, this is only for 1920x1200 and 1920x1080. The other resolutions require a different size or a tad spacing adjustment. I can add more as requested at a later date.
