Title: [Theme] LoginToLion
Post by: Enzo on August 06, 2011, 03:42:06 AM
(http://f.cl.ly/items/2M3t1q1246212c262e29/LoginToLion-ForumPreview-2.0.png) (http://f.cl.ly/items/3s3C1T213D0M1D0d040P/MainSS%20Preview.png)

Click for full preview  ;).

Aptly named and inspired. This was widely requested, as well as fun to make. Thank you for all the kind words, suggestions and downloads =). My intent was to put a "user account" spin on every icon (mostly via the use of animals =P), however I am including several alternates for those seeking a more traditional boot screen. Alternates may be added anytime and though out this topic :-).

This theme features:

•A simple design that lends itself to work with any resolution and any version of Chameleon 2.

•Alternates! Who doesn't like options! Multiple device icon sets, and even a monospaced font.

•Separate Backgrounds download. In your quest for pixel precision, download the background pack to choose the most appropriate background.png resolution.

•Create your own device icons with the downloadable PSD. The PSD is the frame, so it's only a matter of dropping in your image where instructed. Toggle RAID Hud/text and the device_selection as required. Remember to toggle off the background and the "Make visible when saving" folder (a simple gamma adjustment I use to compensate for the typical washed-out look that occurs during boot). Lastly, save as "Save for Web & Devices" with PNG-24 selected and the transparency box ticked.

*New* Now updated to fully support Cham's OS Detection. Detecing Mac OS X 10.4 to 10.8 ML! (http://cl.ly/Ednt), as well as Haiku OS, FreeBSD and OpenBSD (http://cl.ly/Edgl) (all with their own alternates (http://cl.ly/Ef4h)) aside from standard NTFS and EXT3 support.

*New* There are Windows 8 and Mavericks Icons included. Win 8 Preview Here (http://cl.ly/L8dp). Mavericks Preview here (http://f.cl.ly/items/2Y0k2w3X0u1S303E3f21/LoginToLion-Mavericks-Prev.png). However the Mavericks icons aren't in the root directory or named what they should be, they are within the Alternates folder. So it won't simply take advantage of Cham's OS detection, I may or may not update the theme simply to reflect the file changes.

Enjoy!

Ok, sent!

Is the res configured correctly? That is, it's displaying your desired res? Either by it being set in the theme, or the boot.plist. If so, did you then make sure to use the background for that resolution? Backgrounds are included for many resolutions in the download ;-).

Hi Enzo :)

Maybe you could host the theme here on the Voodooproject's server? We allow 32MB in total for attachments per post with individual attachments of 16MB.  Your actual theme here only comes in at 2.6MB.

I know your theme package is about 20Mb in total, but that's mostly due to your generous supply of different sized backgrounds. Maybe you could split your backgrounds in to different .zip archives, say one for 16:10 ratios, one for 16:9 ratios etc. ? Just an idea..  I'll leave the decision up to you but if you want my help in anyway then send me a PM.

BTW - Like I said before in the other topic - Great job with the theme.

I love this theme! How do I get it looking right for 1920x1200. I am using the correct background, but the logos are short and fat and the text is stretched and hard to read. My monitor uses 1920x1200, but if I look at the video info the highest res shown is 1920x1440 or 1600x1200. Is that the problem? Do my monitor and graphics card not match up? Am I just SOL with this monitor?

In regards to splitting the theme... hmm...

I think what's happening here is an issue with the graphics card. It does not support 1920x1200 as a VESA standard. This is necessary to get Cham displayed at your native res. This is something I get too with my new card =/. The only thing you can do is compensate for the stretching so it looks proportional, and pick a better res. The other solution is more drastic, it requires flashing the card with a bios? that has that resolution incorporated.

How do I compensate for the stretch?

Squish them in an editor, so when they're stretched, it looks normal. hmm think that's all you can do.

OK. I used iResizer and loaded everything but the fonts, background, progress bars and the menu selection. Then set the hight to 100% and the width to my unscientific number of 85% and it looks pretty good. As for the font, I just used one from a different theme that worked. Its looking great now. Thanks for the help and for the great theme.

The host Enzo chooses to use is down, so I am temporarily posting most of the original files here for anyone to download.

LoginToLion_Theme is just the theme from Enzo's original package.
LoginToLion_Alternate_Backgrounds contains just three backgrounds which can be resized.
LoginToLion_Alternates contains the different device images and the monospaced font_console.png

@Enzo - when your hosting is sorted out, let me know and I'll remove these if you wish.

Ok updated OP. Will update other themes soon. Added Mirrors for anyone having trouble downloading from cl.ly

Thanks Black, no need to remove. I did think about splitting up the files, but found it easier (lazy?) to just add a mirror haha. Having backgrounds for the many different resolutions seems overkill, but half-way through creating the theme I realized a simple resize isn't ideal seeing as it's a pattern based image (pursuing consistency and what not, which in itself is prob overkill haha). Not a biggie, it's a very simple BG, but it did affect the download size drastically. If it becomes a problem I will revise it again and apply the methodology to any future themes.

Can Chameleon 2 do native 2560x1600/1440 at boot now? It didn't the last time I checked, though that was a while ago. Maybe it's only a limitation with graphics cards. If that res isn't a VESA standard for it, then it won't work either.

Post by: Enzo on August 28, 2011, 12:44:16 AM
Well, that doesn't exactly straighten things out =P. Don't think Chimera is any different than Cham 2 in regards to theme support. Regardless, if Cham does in fact handle that res, and if your video card has it listed as a VESA res it supports, then here you go:
http://cl.ly/9fHG
It is only the background image, which is all you need for this theme. Let me know if it works.

@7ender
Well if it supports a max of 1280x800, then maybe you can try just setting 1280x800 in Cham's boot.plist and swapping out the background image with the one that's 1280x800.

Swapped out a Galaxy GTS 250 nVidia based 512MB video card for an HIS 6570 Radeon based 1GB video card (with heatsink and fanless - QUIET as a field mouse).

Computer posts, see initial bootloader rotating slash marks for cursor, then black screen until OS X 10.6.8 loads. Have no opportunity to select from amongst various operating systems, including OS X 10.6.8, OS X 10.7.1, or Ultimate Edition Linux 2.9 64 OS.

Changed background screens from alternative backgrounds offered by Enzo, no difference. Still get black screen after posting but before OS X 10.6.8 loads. Can anyone provide me some guidance as to any other setting changes I need to make in order to have opportunity to select form OS's or to add boot flag options (-v, -f, -x, etc.)

Appreciate any help.

That is strange nesnfsn,
Even if it were using a resolution that the card didn't agree with, Cham should still default to 1024x768, making it usable. Aside from maybe trying a different res in your boot.plist, I dunno what it could be.
Title: Re: [Theme] LoginToLion
Post by: nesnfsn on October 02, 2011, 01:00:02 AM
Enzo, thanks for the thoughts. It makes no difference.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the install which was done with an nVidia based video card (Galaxy GTS 250) now using an ATI based HIS HD 6570 video card? Not sure this is relevant, but can't figure out any other reasons that make any sense for this situation. Video card working fine, QE/CI with Front Row and Dashboard. System Profiler shows 1920x1080@60 Hz, Vendor, Device ID and Revision ID.

So that this is clear, I can see the computer when it is going through the initial POST process, then the cursor appears in the top left corner of the screen, turning, then.... BLACK SCREEN. No video until all of a sudden, blue background, then a mere few seconds later, I see my OS X 10.6.8 background (wallpaper) and then top menu bar and dock.

I had even tried running Chameleon Wizard and updated to newer build of Chameleon. No change. I hope that someone can make sense of this for me so that I can get it running.

Okay, HiS 6570 card died, and I have replaced it with a fanless Powercolor 6850. Also, working in Lion 10.7.2, and not SL anymore. Card is recognized automagically by Lion with 1920x1200x32 resolution, all memory. However, only 1 display port (DVI using the VGA adapter) recognized, not the 4 listed when first using SL (2 DVIs, 1 DP, and 1 HDMI).

Using latest Chameleon 16xx something, I had installed LoginToLion, and upon reboot, I see the BIOS post, then the cursor appears turning in the upper left corner of the screen, then nothing, complete blackness and a message about something Unsupported. I proceeded to click on the Enter key twice, and my computer ended up at the main Lion screen.

I then experimented by changing from the LoginToLion theme created by Enzo to the post-installation Default theme that comes from Nawcom's ModCD. I proceeded to reboot the computer, and I see (1) the BIOS posting, (2) the initial Chameleon screen, (3) Chameleon's device selection screen, (4) then my Hackintosh loads with the Apple logo on screen, then flashes and moves to far right of screen, then flashes again, and I logo on right side of screen, but black horizontal bars everywhere. Finally, I see a smaller gray Apple logo in the center of an off-white background, and nearly immediately afterward, voila, (5) Lion's desktop appears on my screen.

I then further experimented by replacing that Default theme with the Different theme found in Theme Park here, and I observe steps (1), (2), (3) and (5) mentioned in the preceding paragraph.

Any ideas why I cannot see steps (1), (2), (3) and (4) using the LoginToLion theme, and why I cannot see step (4) with the Different theme?

nesnfsn is truly confused (and I have read through dozens of threads in these forum, as well as the Stickies, before posting this reply).

Hello again nesnfsn,
As for the 6850 showing only one DVI, are you using GraphicsEnabler=Yes? If not, not it could explain it. AFAIK, though a lot of ATI cards work OOB with 10.6.7/Lion, they still require the right framebuffer for it to be fully functional. Or if you do have it set to Yes, then perhaps trying a different framebuffer may help.

In regards to the strange theme problems, they again make no sense to me haha. The only real potential variable in themes is maybe a large background image (which I always recommend to use the same resolution displayed by Cham), and perhaps the resolution specified in the theme.plist. Both of which are negated by the fact that any Cham2 RC5+ build uses the resolution specified in the boot.plist. Furthermore, up until the screen goes black and the real driver kicks in, it is using pure VESA standards to display an image, so it's rather irrelevant if the card is fully working in the OS. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Pardon my naivete, should I try the framebuffers out when selecting boot options/flags such as "-v", "-f", "-x", etc. So that I would enter say, GraphicsEnabler=Yes AtiConfig=Duckweed (that is the listed framebuffer for my 6850 card) AtiPorts=3? My card has 4 ports, but 2 of them are DVI-I Duals. So I guess I would use 3. Do I have to use all three options/flags simultaneously?

Card apparently uses VESA 3.0, is that the standard that Chameleon and its themes are built around? If not, perhaps that explains some of the problems. If 3.0 is covered, then I am running out of ideas on how to get this working properly with themes other than the default theme.
Thank you Enzo for your thoughts and expertise. I truly appreciate it and I hope that you understand that I mean no disrespect. To the contrary, I truly respect all of you who develop these great tools for other osx users looking to find better ways to use their computers.
Thanks again, and I will try more tomorrow. Would you prefer that I post here, or PM you with any developments as I experiment with the Chameleon themes?

Not a problem nesnfsn,

Perhaps it can merit it's own post in a more appropriate category here on the forums. If you want to cover all your bases, other osx86 forums as well heh. Feel free to link us here as well.

Anyways, If you haven't tried using GraphicsEnabler, then that's all you probably have to do to get it working. 6850's are well supported, and it is likely that Cham has that same DeviceID covered. It's only when it's defaulting to something your hardware doesn't think is right that you can try other framebuffers, along with those other boot up flags that I'm not too familiar with =P. And yes, you can simply enter that exactly as a bootup option to try it first:  GraphicsEnabler=Yes
It will take precedence over anything you have set in the boot.plist. So give just that a try and see if it gives you all the right ports (working of course), then if that doesn't work, then you can look more into framebuffers and what not =).

I don't understand why people are having trouble with the download.

163.com is based in China: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetEase

Maybe they are blocked from downloading it or something.

Thanks,

Hello Anthony,
This is currently not possible AFAIK. I believe it is being worked on however, the ability to detect different versions of OS X.

Hi Slice. Which version of Chameleon is able to recognize different cats (version) of OS X?
Really Chameleon do it. Lion and Snow must be booted different way so the bootloader already knows OS version.
But any improvements stopped and now only bugs is accepted into trunk.

hi Enzo,

one word ....... Congratulation.

this theme rocks, and here is a version of my branch that is able to detect the OS(x) version of each volume

u can install it on an usb key to test it  ;)

the good new is that it will be easily portable to the trunk,

if you want to test it, please use the version of "LoginToLion" and the boot file (modules are not really needed) provided inside the archive here : http://www.mediafire.com/?39rk6dt9rwmf8kx (deprecated !!, see my branch for a faster and updated version)

Nice job cparm, though I only have Lion installed so can't really test it against different OS X versions.
I'll see if I can find some time to maybe restore an old SL partition for testing. If I do, I'll post back a report.

Thanks for sharing your boot file, cpram. I removed my boot from root and replaced it with yours; I renamed my Default folder inside Extra/Themes and renamed your LoginToLion to Default and moved it to Extra/Themes.

Upon restart, I only see text to choose which drive to boot. Also, once at desktop, resolution is low. This is what's inside my org.chameleon.Boot.plist:

Yes, I'm back to r1743. I wanted to try cpram's trunk where different version of OS X is detected by Chameleon (and displayed via LoginToLion theme). Any ideas?

Hey Enzo.
Yep - An update to the creating themes guide is required. I'll look at this in the next week, though an answer to issue #209 (http://forge.voodooprojects.org/p/chameleon/issues/209/) will be needed first. And also, IIRC I maxed out the character limit when I previously revised the guide so I will have to see if the site admins can adjust the setting.  :P

And also thanks to Blackosx & iFabio for bootloader. You guys doing nice work!
the idea is create a new theme LoginToML, i already tested this OS on Ermac's trunk
so I added ML icons and edited the Leopard icons & renamed for a new boot rev1823,

hope you'll like it!  :)

Hi 7ender

Thanks for your contribution but can you tell more about this boot file you've posted? What have you done to make it different?

Cparm has a complete 'up-to-date' version of the LoginToLion theme in his branch which already has mountain lion icons and also icons for freeBSD, openBSD and Haiku.
http://forge.voodooprojects.org/p/chameleon/source/tree/HEAD/branches/cparm/artwork/themes/LoginToLion
Though to be fair you wouldn't have known that as they haven't been put in to the wild yet.

However, it's good to have another contributor here so I want to encourage you to continue, though in this case I'm not sure what's the best way to proceed here. Either you could:
A) Ask Enzo if it's okay to release this as a separate theme?
B) Ask Enzo to add these icons to his theme?
C) Liaise with Enzo and Cparm and arrange to combine all variations together in to one master theme?

Enzo, cparm - What do you think would be the best way to sort this?

Regards

Hi Enzo

Good point...

As Fabio is using (http://forge.voodooprojects.org/p/chameleon/source/commit/1823/):
device_hfsplus_mountain.png
device_hfsplus_mountain_o.png
device_hfsraid_mountain.png
device_hfsraid_mountain_o.png

and cparm is using (http://forge.voodooprojects.org/p/chameleon/source/commit/1824/):
device_hfsplus_ml.png
device_hfsplus_ml_o.png
device_hfsraid_ml.png
device_hfsraid_ml_o.png

Personally, I prefer ml over mountain, but either way, one has got to be decided on.

EDIT:
I have the .PSD's for the Haiku and ML icons that cparm's using if you want them?
Alternatively you can ask 7ender to supply his artwork for his icons.

hi, Blackosx, Enzo and all,
i think the best solution would to use the voodoo forge as we use it for chameleon or for the prefpane, with a trunk (the official release) and different branches , what do you think ?

ps: about ml or mountain, for the device name... i prefer ml, mainly because we use sl for snow leopard

Thanks for the feedback guys.

ml it is then. Good - I'll now know what to add when I next work on updating the creating themes guide.

@Fabio - I see you've already updated the code in your branch - however, I suggest you check a post at the Chameleon installer topic at Insanelymac about the ml icons showing for the lion partitions for your branch.

I'm not sure ATM about the plan from the devs for an official update to the trunk for mountain lion though I'm sure it will happen when the time is right.

So an svn repo for the themes? - interesting idea cparm.
Would we use it for all themes, or maybe just some? as some themes won't get changed very often.
I can suggest it to Zef to see what he wants to do..

Excellent theme.

Here's a working modified 2560x1440 background: http://netload.in/dateiJg9h5El0tO/background.png.htm

The one posted on page 2/3 of this thread is too large in terms of filesize and gives a memory allocation error when used with Chameleon/Chimera.

Looks lovely on a 27" Cinema Display!

For some reason, the fonts with this theme are slightly messed up for me. I'm using a 1600x900 resolution in VESA. The fonts aren't as sharp looking and clear as they are in this post. Also, some characters have spaces before them. Another thing: when verbose booting, it sometimes freezes at a certain point when loading kexts. This is a theme issue, because verbose boots work fine with other themes. Other than that, this theme is perfect!
Title: Re: [Theme] LoginToLion
Post by: Enzo on May 18, 2012, 01:27:12 AM
Hello adsfman,

I don't know why that is. Though on here all you see is photoshop representations, the font should look pretty close to it on the countdown screen. It is in the second screen that Cham has a bug with transparency, so it ends up looking a little bit faded? Or at least the edges do. I do try to compensate for this, and I believe I get it as close as I'd like without sacrificing too much in most themes. You can always try any other font. There is an alternate monospaced font and you can create one yourself at: http://www.cyberdisk.de/

The theme version that's in the chamber wizard may be outdated. The first version didn't have the files named appropriately since that functionality was yet to be added officially. Try downloading it from here.

Not sure what you mean fraom. Simply specify a VESA resolution your card supports. Do note that some cards don't support standard resolutions, meaning it will look upscaled or stretched no matter what. You can see what VESA resolutions your card supports by going into graphics info within the Cham boot screen.

Have you tried using the font_console_MONOSPACED.png alternate in the alternates folder? I do recommend it for heavier use of verbose mode, as it could very well be the spacing I used in my font.

Yes it must be png. Save it as PNG from within Photoshop. Don't just change the file extension.

I'm sorry, for the font for your customized text on the background? You can do whatever you want to the background, as long as you save as png. Actually, save for web & devices so that it keeps size to a minimum.

No love for 2560? EDIT: Ahh nevermind, I can run at 1920x1080, but the icons are stretched on a 16:9 display.

PS: I tried making a 2560 linen background in GIMP and would get a "out of memory" error at boot time. Is this a limitation of the bootloader? A problem with the way the image is compressed?

Ah yes you are lol jk. Yeah, I never bothered with a  2560 version because it wasnt a vesa standard afaik. However I do know that many are modifying roms now. Anyways, I did make one iirc on page 2. Though later someone had the same issue you describe. They posted a working one here shortly after.

hi enzo, thank u for the great theme!

- I use Chimera v1.11.1 r1394 and it does not recognize mountain lion and therefor is not showing the correct image. maybe there is an solution, else I ll live with changed image names.

- If u have some free time I'd ask u if u could make an windows 7 icon, I bet a lot of ppl would appreciate it. maybe u need just a few minutes, I'd need a few weeks ;)

ty anyway, and awesome theme!

Hello OLK,

You probably need to update Chimera. Don't like my wallpaper styled Win7 icon? =P Maybe I'll have a go at it soon.

Isn't Chimera v1.11.1 r1394, the latest? Yes I like your icon, to me its just not the typical windows 7 icon like the ML for example. But don't get me wrong, thats just the last 0,1%. TY

I've been using this theme exclusively for more than a year now and still love it as much as the first time I saw it.  I came back here to see if it had been updated to provide an icon for Windows 8.  Any plans for that?  It would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I now have windows 7 and windows 8 so it would be great to be able to have different device icons for each. Anyway to do this? I use chimera and I see chameleon can distinguish between os x versions. Anyway to fool it and show windows 8 as different type of device than windows 7

I made some Windows 8 icons just to tide me over until Enzo posts his official ones.  They lack his quality, as I am no graphic artist, but they'll do for now.

The one on the left seems to be the most true to Windows 8.  It's what you see when you boot up.

The result:

Click to DL. There are a few color alternates in there as well, and a more standard Win7 icon for good measure. Enjoy.

I looked all over for themes. This is the best and cleanest. Simple, clean, elegant.

Question, I like the list of options showing at the bottom of the screen. Any way to make it appear automatically?

Thanks again Enzo!

Hi Enzo, I'm back.  The last time I was here was to request that you make a Windows 8 graphic for this terrific-looking theme.  Now, I'm back to say that I've switched to Clover.  Any interest in morphing this theme for Clover?  I'd certainly use it. Just an idea, not a demand.  Thanks for all the hard work you put into this theme.

Hello mnfesq,

Don't know anything about Clover. I'm at least curious, would have to look for their documentation or what not.

Edit: Well, in my quick search, documentation seems sparse.

Here are some links:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/cloverefiboot/

http://www.osx86.net/guides-tutorials/19291-guide-clover-efi-bootloader-2.html#post124497

Hope these help.  From what I hear on other forums and, in my own experience, Clover is the bootloader of the future and Chameleon is on its way out.  Even ErmaC is developing Clover.

Thanks for the links,

I'll give it a shot soon, why not haha. May take me a little while, hm I'm not sure how I'll even be testing it as I won't be jumping to it anytime soon. Maybe through a virtual setup, like I did with Cham. Looking at the themes it looks pretty simple. I may be wrong, but it seems to be just a simple image in the background for the selection, if that's the case it may mean there's no separate device image for hover, which would make the arrow in lion not work out, I'd have to move it up and it won't look like it's overlaying the circular icon. Unless none of the themes are making use of such functionality. The animation stuff is interesting =p.

Try installing it to a USB flash drive.  That's what most people do to get it working.  Because its a UEFI bootloader, you can load drivers before you get to the boot window.  That means you can have animation/more advanced graphics, as you noticed, and you can have mouse functionality as well.  I suspect that, as it develops further, it can support some pretty advanced features for a bootloader.

Hey, love the theme, any possibility you could make an optional legacy logo replacement with the crosshatch background and translucent apple logo like the opening screen with the countdown timer. I tried myself but honestly didn't have a clue?

Cheers, and keep up the great work!

Thanks inkychris,

Do you mean this graphic: http://cl.ly/Qxne ?
and do you mean the linen background that serves the entire theme? I could whip it up I suppose.

Yeah I do mean the linen background, and not that logo, basically it would just look like the theme you've done already but obviously without to boot options, like the screenshot you have advertising the theme on page one of this post.

Sorry, I'm having a hard time finding the "original link" you reference. All I know is it's somewhere in this thread. The files you posted in #1 are clearly not what you're talking about, as they have different backgrounds and do not include any icons for Mavericks or Windows 8.

Would you mind reposting the links to the most recent version of LogInToLion? Or whatever it is you're referring to? I can't find them amongst these hundreds of posts.

Thanks!

The original link is in the original post, with the graphic DL button. The Mavericks and Win8 icons are within the Alternates folder, which may be why you're not seeing them.

At this stage no. Chameleon looks at the hard drives format which in Windows's case is NTFS. That means if you have multiple NTFS drives the boot loader will only assigns that single PNG file. I'm not read up on it but maybe Clover may be able to detect different Windows versions?

Since the Mavericks icons from the alternates folder are not recognized automatically,
can someone please tell this noob how to change the lion icon to the mavericks icon.
I'm growing tired of seeing the incorrect icon on startup.
